Black Nightshade Greens (Manathakkali) in Multi grain Bread Upma

Bread upma is a quick fix dish any veggies or leftover curries can be used to make this upma and it will taste awesome. More importantly this can be served any time of the day!!!


I always prepare this dish with brown bread now am moved with multi grain bread have also added left over black nightshade greens (manathakkali keerai) for a change and it worked fantastic.
1/2  Bunch – Black Nightshade (Manathakali Keerai) blanched and chopped
½ loaf – Multigrain bread cut into small pieces
1- Onion chopped
3 – Tomatoes chopped
3 nos – Garlic cloves chopped
1 tbsp – Fresh Coriander chopped
1/2 tsp – Mustard seeds
1/2 tsp – Cumin seeds
¼ tsp – Turmeric powder
1 tsp – Red chilli powder
Pinch – Asafoetida
1 tbsp – Oil
1 tsp – Salt


In a pan add ½ tbsp oil add bread pieces and add ½ tsp red chilli powder ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp turmeric powder and fry them till it turns brownish in color. Set them aside.
In another pan heat remaining oil add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and wait till they crackle.
Fry onions till they turn golden brown.

Add tomatoes, coriander, ½ tsp red chilli powder and ½ tsp salt. Fry for a minute or two until tomato softens.

Add finely chopped greens and add ½ cup water and close the lid cook them till the greens are cooked approx 5 min.
Add the fried bread mixture and mix well. Now the bread upma is ready.
This recipe makes a very good and a healthy breakfast dish.
