Purana Poli n Carrot Moong Paayasam

Aavani avittam or Upaakarma on this day all men and boys
change their sacred thread (Poonal).  A
very high lunch is prepared during this day made poli n paayasam from my end. Relatives
join together in a common place to perform this ritual and eat lunch together.
My MIL always says that this is the only festival exclusively for men so need
to make an elaborate menu.
I made these purana poli n carrot moong paayasam(from Priyas blog) especially
for my FIL who loves sweets.
Purana poli
For the Covering:
1 cup – Maida
Pinch of Turmeric powder
For Filling:
1 cup – Channa dal (soaked for one hour)
1 cup – Jaggery (grated)
1 cup – Coconut (grated)
½ tsp – Cardamom powder
Mixed Nuts 1 tbsp
Ghee for roasting
In a large bowl add maida, oil, turmeric powder and salt,
knead to a soft dough and keep it covered with wet cloth.
Cook the channa dhal in pressure cooker for 2whistles drain
the water and let it cool once cold grind to coarse paste.
Immerse jaggery in ½ cup water once it melts strain it thru
muslin clothe so that the dirt is removed.
In a large pan add the jaggery, grated coconut, cardamom
powder, nuts and  channadal paste, cook
everything until they form a come together like a dough switch off the stove
and cool it.
Roll the prepared covering place the filling inside wrap it
and roll it in shape of pancakes and cook it in tava with spreading ghee on
both sides.
Carrot Moong
1 no – Carrot (chopped)
½ cup – Yellow split moongdal (slightly roasted)
1 cups – Milk
¼ cup – Sweetened condensed milk
Few cashew nuts
1/4 tsp – Cardamom powder
1- tsp – Ghee
Pressure cook the chopped carrots and moongdal together for
2 whistles.
Cool and grind to smooth paste. Boil the milk add condensed
milk and add the paste cook for 5 – 7 minutes in medium flame.
Fry the cashews in ghee add to the paayasam now add cardamom
powder and switch off the stove.

    Mmmmm….love poli…though I wanted to prepare them too for aavaniavittam, but with both my kids i just could'nt do it…will make it very soon
