Homemade caramel sauce is super fun to make and easy too. This toffee flavored sauce makes a multi purpose sauce it can be drizzled over ice cream, made into caramelized popcorn, toffees, drizzled over cakes, topped on custards and much more.
The color of the caramel sauce totally depends on the butter it may vary from lite brown to dark brown. A teaspoon of salt will make a perfect salted caramel sauce. Good quality pan and a spatula is a must need to make this sauce. This sauce stores well in refrigerator and has a longer shelf life. When need it can be removed and slightly warmed up to bring it’s texture back.
Caramelized popcorn makes a great party snack, especially for kid’s party. They can be made well in advance and stored in air tight containers. Movie time without popcorn on a weekend is incomplete.
Preparation time: 5 mins Cooking time: 20 mins Yields: 1 cup
1 cup – Sugar
1/3 cup – Butter
1/2 cup – Whipping cream in room temperature
pinch of salt
In a heavy sauce pan heat sugar, stirring occasionally. Once it starts to become like a mass then it starts to brown lightly.
Once it reaches brown in colour, add butter (stay bit away from the pan) it will start to sizzle. Keep mixing in medium heat once butter is well incorporated then add cream and bring to boil.
Once it boils and becomes to bubble up remove from heat, add salt and set aside.
Transfer to a clean jar and allow homemade caramel sauce to cool down.
For making caramelized popcorn:
Use store bought plain popcorn or buy a ready to make packet and make the popcorn at home in a microwave.
Pour the sauce over the plain popcorn, and make sure they are coated nicely.
Spread on a baking sheet and bake it for 15 mins at 180 C on a preheated oven.
Allow to cool and store it.
